South Cheshire is to become home to another quirky contest as Nantwich Food and Drink Festival organisers prepare for another crowd-puller.

Visitors will test their skill and coordination with the humble spud as part of Nantwich Potato Bowling Championships being unveiled on Sunday of the festival at the White Horse pub.

Spokeswoman Jean Kay said: “The festival is about showcasing fabulous food and giving families a great weekend of fun things to see and do.

“South Cheshire is already home to Willaston Worm Charming Championship and Wybunbury Pie Rolling Contest so we thought we would do something whacky with potatoes.

“Nantwich Potato Bowling Contest should be tremendous fun – think boules only with potatoes!”

The festival, taking place September 5-7, offers host of fun activities from cocktail-making for adults to pizza-making and pork pie workshops for children.

It’s also the venue for the popular Man v Food contest which this year sees male contestants take on a whopper bap filled with Cheshire pork and herb sausage – all in the name of charity.

In previous years contestants have chomped through a 5lb whopper burger and a Mount Vesuvius plate of pasta.

Events co-ordinator Jean, of Nantwich, added: “As organisers of the country’s biggest free food festival we love coming up with novel ideas to inject even more fun.

“Now the stage is set for another contest which we hope will become another highlight on South Cheshire’s social calendar.

“Nantwich Potato Bowling Contest – smashing!”

Contestants will be asked to ‘bowl’ five potatoes. Just like in traditional bowls, they will be scored on how close they come to the jack.

The fun takes place in the beer garden of the Pillory Street pub from 11am.
