The 50 acres of gardens at Tatton have been developing for over 200 years with each successive owner of Tatton playing their part in its evolution. Lewis William Wyatt and Joseph Paxton, architect of Crystal Palace, designed various aspects. Today it is an almost complete picture of how the gardens existed in Edwardian times with wonderful and varied features including stunning formal gardens, productive kitchen gardens and glass houses and an extensive arboretum. The Japanese garden, built over 100 years ago, is arguably the most famous aspect and can easily be viewed from its perimeter. The Italian and Tower gardens are worthy of note as are the Topiary, Rose Garden, Maze and recently restored Conservatory. The Walled Kitchen Garden gives a valuable insight into the traditional skills and procedures employed in years gone by and seasonal produce is available to purchase in the Garden Shop. Children (and adults!) visiting the gardens can have fun in the maze. During 2013 an American Garden will be opened resulting in an historic and contemporary re-interpretation of a vital `missing link’ in the history of English gardens giving a glimpse of Tatton’s garden before the rhododendrons of the 1850s
